DESCRIPTION: Facing the Hydra: Advancing Research Methods in the Socia
l Sciences My thesis focuses on improving methods in social science r
esearch. I was motivated to work on this after completing my first ex
periment, where I encountered several methodological problems for whi
ch the current literature did not have ready solutions. First, I
was curious to investigate the use of incentives to create real stak
es for the choices participants make in experiments, and the effect o
f these real stakes on experimental results. Second, I wanted to esta
blish whether it is important to use equivalence testing methods to t
est whether null results are sufficiently precise. Additionally, I in
vestigated whether businesses that respond to business surveys are me
aningfully different from those that do not.More information on the <
