Precipitation and Drought in Tundra Ecosystems
While traditionally temperature has been studied as the key driving force and limitation of terrestrial arctic ecosystems, precipitation and drought are increasingly emerging as important drivers of, for instance, tundra plant growth and permafrost thaw. Now that Arctic precipitation dynamics are becoming more intense and extreme, the role of drought limitation and hydrological extremes may become more important. In this talk, we will dive into different ways to study and monitor the role of precipitation and drought in key tundra ecosystem processes, and explore the overarching challenge of fieldwork in a system in rapid transition.
