Join us for Sustainability Talks! 10 October 2024 18:00 - 20:30

Who are the change makers of the future? And what can you bring in to contribute to a better world? Get inspired!

Who are the change makers of the future? And what can you do to contribute to a better world? Get inspired by the invited speakers who will share their experience on how to make the world more sustainable.

There are countless great examples of people contributing to a better world. At VU and beyond, scientists, students, and citizens are committed to making the world a better place. Sustainability Office VU, Amsterdam Sustainability Institute and Young Green Business Club Zuidas invite some of such changemakers to speak during the 2024 Sustainability Day, to inspire, and to answer your most pressing sustainability questions.

The event will be officially opened with a keynote speech delivered by Faiza Oulahsen (KPMG), who will share the story of her activism, environmental transformation, and change. After a Q&A with the audience, three local changemakers will present their take on effective changemaking and how they succeeded in personally achieving it - Magnus Skår (Young Green Business Club Zuidas / Deloitte), Esther Kokmeijer (Netherlands-based visual artist), and Krista Boots (MSc Political Science student VU Amsterdam / Partij voor de Dieren & Jonge Klimaatbeweging).

The final component of the official program includes an interdisciplinary dialogue between the Magnus, Esther, Krista, and Tabitha Saliba (original founder Green Office VU & founder of the Green Office Municipality of Amsterdam), moderated by Nienke de la Rive Box.

The evening will close off with drinks and a networking session between our participants.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Faiza Oulahsen works at KPMG as Associate Director on sustainability, where she helps companies and organizations transition towards a sustainable business model. Before joining KPMG, Faiza was Program Director at Greenpeace Netherlands where she pushed for climate action – through high profile actions, lobby and media appearances, from UN climate summits to climate court cases. Krista Boots is a Master's student in Political Science at Vrije Universiteit and is active within the Party for the Animals and the Youth Climate Movement. Her focus is on ending fossil fuel subsidies and promoting sustainable, socially just policies. Through her travels in Australia and New Zealand, she developed a strong awareness of climate change. Krista is committed to a sustainable world, emphasizing the importance of intersectionality and justice within the climate movement.

Esther Kokmeijer is an artist and explorer residing in Rotterdam and working around the globe. In her work as a visual artist, she mainly focuses on the interaction between human and their natural environment, finding expression in journeys, installations, interventions, photo series, documentaries, sculptures, film essays, books, and performances among others. Our relationship to nature and specifically our relationship with water. The theme of water in all its manifestations, such as liquid ‘water’, gaseous ‘vapour’ and solid ‘ice’, has played a major role in her works for several years. Many of her projects are based around the ‘Global Commons’, the globally shared natural resources of the earth; the high oceans, the atmosphere, outer space and Antarctica.

Magnus Skår is a member of the Young Green Business Club Zuidas, where he contributes to the belief that more can be done to advance sustainability in the Zuidas area. Magnus works towards the production of business initiatives which have the power to change these large companies from within.

Tabitha Saliba co-founded the Green Office VU ten years ago and became its first program manager. After graduating, she established a Green Office at the municipality of Amsterdam to promote sustainability. She is now a manager at the city's Engineering Department, responsible for the sustainability strategy of construction projects. She studied Law at the VU and developed her passion for sustainability as a board member of the SRVU Student Union.
