FSS Talma event 2024 19 January 2024 14:30 - 17:00

We would like to invite everyone to the FSS Talma event on Friday 19 January 2024! Mark your calendars for this afternoon of celebration and inspiration.

Join us as the Faculty of Social Sciences celebrates her research initiatives and reveals the winners of the annual research awards. The theme of the Talma lecture this year is: ‘Creating Impact: Engaged Social Scientists Taking Responsibility’

The Talma lecture 2024 celebrates the power inherent in the social sciences to catalyze positive change. The theme of "Giving a Voice" encapsulates the essence of empowerment, emphasizing the vital role social sciences play in amplifying unheard narratives, fostering inclusivity, and paving the way for a society where every individual's perspective is acknowledged and valued. Engaged scholarship, co-creation and our collective ability to articulate complex ideas in a manner accessible to diverse audiences will determine the extent of our societal impact.

This Talma lecture seeks to create a moment where ideas flourish and perspectives merge. Together, let us explore the multifaceted dimensions of societal impact within social sciences, fostering a deeper understanding of how empowerment and science communication propel us toward a more enlightened and inclusive society and act as powerful catalysts for positive change.

The Talma lecture will be held by the university historian of VU Amsterdam Ab Flipse (check out his project 'Memory of VU' here) and Hedwig te Molder (watch a video on her work here). After their lectures, there will be a panel discussion. The panelists are Luisa Schneider, Marieke van Wieringen, Halleh Ghorashi and Kees Boersma.

After the lecture, the winners of the FSS Research Awards will be announced. FSS grants three research awards: the masterthesis award, the dissertation award and the (senior) research award. You can check out the nominees here. We end the afternoon with the New Year's reception.
