Science in the Cloud: working together on citizen science

Make an appointment
Last updated on 23 July 2024
In the Science in the Cloud project, universities and libraries join forces with citizens to create, analyse and disseminate knowledge. Would you like to put Citizen Science into practice or are you already doing so? Then be sure to contact the University Library to discuss the possibilities of this project.

What is Citizen Science?
Citizen Science or citizen science is a form of research that actively involves citizens in different phases of scientific research. This can range from collecting data and conducting experiments to analysing results and disseminating knowledge. Citizen involvement provides new perspectives and insights, which can lead to innovative solutions to scientific and societal issues.

Want to know more?
Are you a scientist or employee of the VU and would you like to learn more about citizen science? Would you like to take advantage of this innovative project and contribute to scientific research together with citizens? ‘Science in the Cloud’ offers you the chance to be actively involved in developing knowledge and strengthening the link between science and society.

By joining this project, you can:

  • Collaborate with citizens: Work with motivated citizen scientists who bring a fresh view and new perspectives to scientific questions.
  • Use innovative methods: Use innovative methods to create, analyse and share knowledge.
  • Make science accessible: Help bring science closer to society and contribute to public engagement in research.
  • Network with professionals: Expand your professional network by collaborating with colleagues from different universities, libraries and knowledge institutions.
  • Create societal impact: Make a direct contribution to societal issues by making scientific research accessible and relevant to a wide audience.

Would you like to participate in this project and make a difference? Then make an online appointment right away via the button on this page. We are ready to inform and guide you in your involvement in ‘Science in the Cloud.’ Together, we can bring science closer to society and promote knowledge sharing.

KnowledgeCloud

To promote citizen science, we are working on KnowledgeCloud, an innovative platform developed by libraries. KnowledgeCloud provides a digital space where communities, citizen scientists and knowledge institutions can collaborate on scientific and societal issues on an equal level. Both online and offline meetings encourage knowledge development and connection building.

Science in the Cloud
Science in the Cloud brings science closer to society and allows people to be involved in their immediate environment. Science in the Cloud is a promising development in which boundaries between experts and the public are blurring. Knowledge sharing becomes an inclusive, engaging experience for all involved.

Collaboration
Science in the Cloud is a collaboration between KnowledgeCloud, VU University Library, the Amsterdam Public Library, the Royal Library, Waag Futurelab and VU Athena Institute. Their common goal is to promote Citizen Science by improving the existing KnowledgeCloud platform. This project, funded by PICA Foundation and running from July 2023 to June 2025, creates a hybrid digital public space where scientific and societal issues are addressed. The ultimate goal is to make this platform available to all (library) institutions that want to be involved in Citizen Science and science communication.
