Knowledge security

Last updated on 8 July 2022
Below are the current guidelines on knowledge security. This is still a work in progress so an update may be forthcoming soon.

An overview of the Knowledge Security guidelines.

Guidelines

  • New employee

    • If you plan to hire someone, it is advised to first check against the sanctions list whether the country, concerning the institution where the person works or has worked, or the person himself, is on this list ( EU Sanctions Map). This is especially true for Iran, Syria, North Korea or China. Information about the countries can also be found on the following government website: Countries and regions (rvo.nl).
    • If the person in question is from a country that is on the sanction list, please contact the HR advisor as soon as possible, in any case before an offer is made.
    • The HR advisor will then, after consultation with the researcher and the department management, and advice from the FB and the knowledge safety advisory group, indicate whether it is possible to offer a contract.
  • Partnerships

    • If you plan to enter into a partnership with an institution that is on the sanction list, please contact the department manager.
    • This case can then be discussed in the MT department and the FB and advice can be requested from the knowledge safety advisory group.
    • With regard to China, there are no formal restrictions on collaborating with Chinese scientists. Collaborations with research institutions that have strong ties to the Chinese military should be avoided (in particular the so-called “Seven Sons”).
  • Special provisions Russia/Belarus

    • In the current situation, it is allowed to sign papers with co-authors from Russian and Belarusian institutions, provided that the origin of the data is clearly and unambiguously stated and the results of the papers are fully reproducible and accessible.
    • Russian employees may be employed. Please contact the HR advisor at least 3 months before the contract starts to avoid any surprises.
    • Formal collaborations with Russian or Belarusian institutions are not allowed, but informal contacts with scientists in those countries are.
    • Please note that this situation can change quickly, so it is important to stay current with the guidance.
