Science Communication Lab (SciCom Lab)

Last updated on 2 October 2025
The SciCom Lab is a training programme for early-stage researchers who want to communicate with conviction, care and creativity.

This cross-faculty programme differs from regular communication courses in its reflective approach, emphasising the importance of positionality, personal values and design thinking. Participants apply the lessons from the programme directly to their own research by developing a science communication product (podcast, lecture, workshop, exhibition, film, art installation, etc.) that reflects their individual values, goals and context.

Timeline: January - May 2026 (exact dates not yet known).
Number of participants: 15-20
Language of instruction: English, with the option to submit material in Dutch.
Cost: None.
ECs provided: None.

Who can apply:
The programme is intended for early-stage researchers (PhD students, postdoctoral researchers and assistant professors) with a strong interest in science communication. Please note that you may need permission from your manager/supervisor(s) before enrolling (especially PhD students), as we cannot currently offer ECs in exchange for participation.

This programme provides relevant and up-to-date knowledge of science communication by integrating theory, practice and hands-on experiences.

The programme consists of four modules taught by different VU experts (covering topics such as science communication models, framing, strategic design, emotions, storytelling and media) and a final event where participants present their science communication products. Learning formats include interactive lectures integrating theory and practice, intervision sessions, individual coaching and field trips to science communication organisations in the Amsterdam region.

Programme overview:

  1. Module 1 - Rethinking science communication
  2. Module 2 - Strategic science communication & design thinking
  3. Module 3 - The art of communication
  4. Module 4 - Media, stories and 'the audience

The programme schedule will be published in early October.

Interested candidates should send an e-mail to programme coordinator Kaelin DeLong (k.e.de.long@vu.nl) with the subject line "Application SciCom Lab. Application materials can be in English or Dutch. Please include:

- Your CV (max 2 pages) OR a link to your LinkedIn profile
- A motivation statement explaining 1) your interest in science communication, and 2) how participation in this programme will contribute to your research. This statement can be submitted in a format of your choice:
- Voice recording (max. 8 minutes)
- Video (max. 8 minutes)
- Letter (max. 1000 words) - If you choose this option, please include a short AI statement (~100 words) indicating whether (or not) you have used AI, how and why.

Selection process
Applications and interviews continue until all programme subjects are filled and programme enrolment is basically "first come, first served". If your application meets our requirements and we still have space in the programme, you will be invited for an (informal) interview on the VU campus. This is mainly to get to know each other and answer any questions you may have.

Do you have questions about the programme or would you like to collaborate? If so, please contact programme coordinator Kaelin DeLong (k.e.de.long@vu.nl).
