Dialogue Incubator

Last updated on 21 October 2025
The Dialogue Incubator is an intensive learning path for assistant professors (UDs) who want to strengthen their research through dialogue with society.

Questions about the programme or interested in working together? Contact programme coordinator Sem Barendse (s.b.barendse@vu.nl).

Instead of a traditional course, the programme offers a learning environment in which researchers experiment with new roles, methods and perspectives. Participants design and implement their own dialogue intervention with their team and discover how dialogue yields new insights, promotes equal exchange and increases their impact as researchers.

Timeline: October 2025 - June 2026
First session: 27 November (full day)
Second session: 11 December (13.00-17.00)
Number of participants: 8-10 teams (each led by a UD)
Language of communication: English, with the possibility to deliver materials/ experimentation in Dutch/
Cost:
no
Seed funding: €2,500 per project

Who can apply?

The programme is intended for assistant professors (UDs) at VU University Amsterdam. Each participant participates with a small research team (e.g. with a PhD student, postdoc or communication professional), where the UD is the main contact. Each team consists of 2/3 participants. Candidates are interested in experimenting with dialogue within their research practice.

Experience of a previous participant:
"The most valuable aspect for me was the sense of community. Working together towards a shared goal created equal exchange between practitioners and researchers, and gave our project a much wider reach."

Curriculum

This programme provides hands-on experience in designing, facilitating and conducting dialogue as part of your research practice. Combining theory, practice and peer learning, the researcher explores new roles as both researcher and facilitator. Participants immediately apply what they have learned by developing and implementing a dialogue intervention with their team. Working methods include interactive workshops, design sessions, peer feedback, one-to-one coaching and a concluding reflection session.

Programme schedule:
- Module 1 - Retreat & introduction to dialogue design
- Module 2 - Designing Dialogue (part I)
- Module 3 - The Art of Dialogue (part I)
- Module 4 - Designing Dialogue (part II)
- Module 5 - The Art of Dialogue (part II)
- Module 6 - Closing session

The programme schedule will be published in early October.
