Apply for the group disability insurance scheme

Take action now
Last updated on 6 June 2025
VU Amsterdam believes it is important to protect employees against income loss due to occupational disability, and already partially insures you for this.

VU Amsterdam took out a group disability insurance (AOV) with Loyalis. The insurance offers two types of coverage:

  • Coverage 1: partial disability (35-80%)
  • Coverage 2: full disability (80-100%)

Employees* become participants in the partial disability insurance upon commencement of employment. Do you prefer certainty in all cases? You can extend your insurance yourself by including coverage for full disability.

* The following employees are excluded from this partial disability coverage group insurance: on-call employees, employees who are not registered with the ABP pension fund, and employees who are not socially insured in the Netherlands (even if they participate in the ABP pension fund).

Why is this insurance important?

Many people assume that the Dutch social security system provides sufficient income protection in case of disability. Unfortunately, this is not always true. Government and pension fund benefits can be temporary and insufficient in some cases. The Loyalis group disability insurance (AOV) aligns well with the WIA legislation, the Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities, and the pension scheme. You only insure what is necessary, which keeps the premium low. More importantly, it helps prevent your income from falling to welfare level if you become disabled.

Advantages of participating

  • Security: supplement to at least 70% of your former income until state pension age
  • Convenience: automatic monthly premium deduction via your gross salary, giving you a tax advantage
  • Low premium: always 31% premium discount
  • Accessible: no medical questions in the first 6 months after commencement of employment

Coverage 1

  • Coverage for partial disability (35-80%)

This coverage provides a supplement to 70% of the former salary until state pension age. The WIA, the disability pension (AOP) and any other income from or related to employment are deducted from this. Effective from your first working day, you will automatically be enrolled in the group partial disability coverage. VU Amsterdam contributes 50% of the premium; the remaining 50% is deducted monthly from your gross salary. The employer’s contribution is part of the agreement with the Local Consultative Body on decentralized employment conditions funds for the period 2025-2029.

  • Opt-out declaration required if you do not wish to participate

If you choose not to participate in the partial disability coverage, you must submit a signed opt-out declaration within two months after your employment start date. You can request this form from the HR Service Desk. Any premium already deducted will be refunded to you.

If you decide to opt-out later, you must also submit a signed opt-out declaration. Your participation will then end on the first day of the following calendar month. Note: if you wish to rejoin later, you will need to complete medical questions when you register.

Coverage 2

  • Coverage for full disability (80-100%)

You can also take out an additional insurance for full disability (80-100%). You can arrange this - without medical questions – within 6 months after commencement of employment at www.loyalis.nl/vu-en. The total premium will be deducted monthly from your gross salary.

  • Conditions

To get the additional insurance, you must meet the following conditions:

    • You are registered with the ABP pension fund
    • You are not socially insured outside the Netherlands (that is the case if you were obliged to take out health insurance in the Netherlands)
    • You are not an on-call employee
  • Arrange additional coverage immediately?

You can also take out an additional insurance for full disability. You arrange this at www.loyalis.nl/vu-en. The employer number (affiliation number) with ABP is 5700. VU Amsterdam deducts the premium for the insurance from your monthly gross salary for the duration of the insurance.

If you apply within six months of commencement of employment, then Loyalis will accept you without medical questions. If you are employed for more than six months, an extensive health declaration is part of the acceptance process.

Were you already employed at VU Amsterdam before 1 June 2025? Then a one-off promotion is currently running. If you take out a full disability coverage between 1 June 2025 and 30 September 2025, no medical questions will be asked. This rare opportunity allows you to swiftly arrange disability insurance with no medical exclusions on your coverage.

  • Termination of employment

Upon termination of your employment, the premium deductions will end.

Would you like to preserve income protection after leaving employment? Then contact the customer service of Loyalis. They will discuss with you how to maintain the insurance.
