Assessment Framework for International Collaborations

Last updated on 14 April 2025
Scientific practice is impossible without international collaboration. Recently, awareness has grown at VU that collaborations that may be permitted under laws and regulations are not always desirable from the perspective of human rights and armed conflict.

This assessment framework ‘Risks surrounding violations of human rights and armed conflict’' has been developed to make staff aware of these risks and to help them reach a considered and responsible decision on whether or not to collaborate with an organization, funder or person.

The assessment framework provides a process for assessing international collaborations. Does the collaboration fit to the values of VU Amsterdam? Is there sufficient academic autonomy? Are there risks in terms of human rights or academic freedom? The assessment framework helps researchers, faculties and executives to deal with these risks carefully - and provides room for advice in doubtful cases.

This version of the framework was created based on a pilot, evaluation by an independent committee, consultation within the university community and insights and experiences from other academic institutions. It will be further refined in the coming period based on feedback from students and staff of VU Amsterdam.

An English version of the concept framework will become available as soon as possible.
