PhD research at the Faculty of Law

Last updated on 12 June 2023
The Faculty of Law of VU University Amsterdam offers PhD candidates a stimulating research environment, both for PhD candidates employed by the faculty (internal PhD candidates) and external PhD candidates.

A PhD candidate working full-time writes a dissertation in four years under the supervision of a professor who has expertise in the relevant domain. An day to day supervisor is also involved in each PhD trajectory, who - depending on the requirements of the PhD candidate - offers close process guidance. Every PhD candidate is also automatically a member of the Graduate School.

In addition to conducting research, all PhD candidates must achieve 30 EC of education/training. Also, most internal PhD candidates are involved in teaching during the middle years of their track. This can be in the form of (guest) lectures, tutorials or thesis supervision. In this way they are well prepared for a further career in science, in which education and research play the greatest role.

In the legal discipline it has traditionally been customary to obtain a doctorate on the basis of a monograph. However, some research topics lend themselves perfectly to writing articles that can then be used for a PhD. In such cases, the faculty encourages its PhD candidates to write a paper-based dissertation.

To be eligible for a PhD position, you must hold a Master's degree or have successfully completed the doctoral examination or a related examination. Available internal PhD positions are announced on the VU website, see vacancies. Talented students are also sometimes actively approached for a PhD track.

The faculty does not charge any costs (fees) for following a PhD track.

PhD research

  • External PhD candidates

The faculty offers the opportunity to conduct PhD research as an external PhD candidate. The external PhD candidate is supervised by a professor with related expertise. Prospective external PhD candidates who are interested can register via the online application portal of the VU. They will in any case have to submit a research proposal. The research proposal must be of excellent quality and preferably contribute to the research profile of the faculty. The faculty does not charge any fees for following a PhD track as an external PhD candidate.

  • Doctorate Regulations

The Doctorate Regulations of the VU officially set out the rules to which the doctoral program is bound. These regulations apply to anyone working on PhD research that will be defended at the VU. The regulations include:

    • which steps a PhD candidate must take to be admitted to the track
    • which educational requirements a PhD candidate must meet
    • what conditions have been set for (the number of) supervisors
    • how the reading committee is arranged
    • what the attainment targets are for a PhD
    • how to obtain the predicate cum laude
    • the procedure regarding double promotions and joint promotions

    Guideline Thesis

It is possible for the Faculty of Law to promote a scientific monograph or a compilation of a number of individual articles. A guideline of a maximum of 300 pp applies to both. (100,000 words) A number of additional requirements apply to obtaining a PhD on articles. Read more about these requirements in the thesis guidelines.

  • Graduate School

At the Faculty of Law, the PhD program is offered by the Graduate School. The training consists of a number of compulsory components, compulsory elective components and a free component. See the exact content of the PhD training here.
