Emergency leave or short-term sick leave

Take action now
Last updated on 12 May 2023
If you require leave to deal with an urgent personal problem, you can request emergency leave or short-term sick leave. This leave is only granted in case of exceptional personal or unforeseen circumstances for which you require time off work.

After you have informed your manager, you can request this leave using the Apply for or amend special leave self-service option. This option can be found via the blue ‘Take action now’ button on this page.

When is emergency leave or short-term sick leave granted?

You are entitled to emergency leave or short-term sick leave in the following cases:

  • if you have to take time off immediately due to circumstances beyond your control;
  • if you have to take time off to meet an obligation imposed by law or by the state;
  • if you have to take time off due to exceptional personal circumstances.

The following are examples of situations in which you are entitled to leave:

  • your child has become unwell and you have to collect them from school;
  • your partner is due to give birth;
  • a water pipe has burst in your home and you need to get a plumber immediately;
  • an immediate family member has died (an immediate family member is your blood relative, your spouse or your registered partner, or a first or second degree relative);
  • you are only able to vote during working hours;
  • you need to see the doctor and can only do so during working hours (or you have to accompany someone close to you to the doctor).

According to Article 4.22 paragraph 3 of the Collective Labour Agreement, during emergency leave there is a right to continued payment of wages for a maximum of 2 days per calendar year. More days are for one's own account or transferred to another type of leave.
