Financial adjustments and budget cuts

On this page, we gather all relevant information about the budgetary measures – both centrally and by faculty and service – and provide frequently asked questions.

The Dutch government’s budget cuts to higher education, combined with the decrease in student numbers, present VU Amsterdam with a significant challenge. As a result, we need to save 60 million euros between 2025 and 2028. This means we must take significant steps and make difficult choices together.

Our ambitions remain central
Our strategic ambitions continue to be the foundation of everything we do. We remain committed to high-quality education, groundbreaking research, and professional management. Our educational vision, which focuses on a strong academic foundation and connection with society, remains central. Additionally, we continue to work on effectiveness, sustainability, and innovation in our operations.

Additional information by service and faculty

On the implementation of the financial adjustment
Each faculty and service of VU Amsterdam has been tasked with implementing measures that fit their specific situation, with the goal of ensuring long-term sustainability of VU Amsterdam, without compromising the quality of our education and research. Both cost-saving measures and opportunities to generate additional income are being considered – hence, we refer to this as restructuring and adjustment. Faculties and services determine which measures they can and must take to meet the goals. Additionally, services will need to adapt their offerings in response to these measures. This requires close coordination, while also remaining flexible to current developments.

When will there be more clarity?
The way faculties and services implement the task will differ, and so will the timing; the measures will not be implemented simultaneously. The aim is to have an overview of the measures and their phasing from all units by the summer of 2025. After that, decision-making regarding the implementation of the plans will take place until early 2026.

We understand that this period brings uncertainty and concerns. As VU, we strive for transparency, involvement, and support. We are doing everything we can to ensure that our staff and students are informed and supported as clearly and promptly as possible.
