The National Student Survey

Last updated on 2 October 2025
The National Student Survey (NSE) is a large-scale, nationwide survey in which students in higher education are invited to share their opinions on their programmes, their universities and colleges. Since 2009, VU students have been invited to participate in this study.

The survey

In January, February and March students are asked in to complete the questionnaire and give their opinion on various aspects of their education, such as the content of the programme, acquired skills, preparation for their professional career, teachers, accessibility of information, study facilities, review and assessment, study schedules, study load and student counseling.

What will be done with the results?

The results of the survey will be analyzed and published in June. The results per programme and individual questions are accessible via the NSE-dashboard (NSE Overzicht Cijfers - Power BI). Please note: you need to log in on your vu-account. No access to the dashboard? Please contact team Education Analytics.

VU Amsterdam improves its education and facilities based on the results of the NSE. Information about the results is presented to prospective students in information materials available at https://www.studiekeuze123.nl/nse. In addition, the Keuzegids Universiteiten (University Selection Guide) and Elsevier will publish a comprehensive comparison of institutions and programmes in the Netherlands in autumn. The Keuzegids Deeltijd en Duaal (Part-time and Dual Selection Guide) and the Keuzegids Masteropleidingen (Master's Programmes Selection Guide) will be published in spring. The results of the NSE are used in all these publications.

Stichting Studiekeuze123

The NSE falls under the responsibility of Stichting Studiekeuze123. Stichting Studiekeuze123 is an initiative of the HBO Council, NRTO, VSNU and the student organisations LSVb and ISO, and thus represents the entire higher education sector.
