The maintenance and reuse of furniture

FCO is responsible for the procurement, maintenance, repair, and replacement of all furniture at VU Amsterdam. This does not apply to any items of furniture that are purchased by the faculties/service departments themselves.

The underlying principle is that furniture should be used sustainably. We want to help to minimize residual waste by purchasing furniture that consists of:

  • As many circular materials and/or parts as possible
  • Upholstered products that we can reupholster
  • Replaceable individual, detachable parts

Based on the multi-year furniture maintenance plan, each year some of the furniture on campus is cleaned, refurbished (reupholstering/rebuilding) or replaced. In rooms, we therefore find a mix of repurposed, refurbished and new furniture. We also furnish environments with second-hand furniture. Together with contractors Gispen and Workbrands, we aim for 100% circular furniture. They take the furniture to be replaced for recycling or the products are offered through second-hand sales channels.

Is your desk/chair broken or do you see damaged furniture in a teaching or meeting room? Please report it using this form on the Service Portal so we can replace it.

Health and safety advice on furniture

If you need advice on purchasing and/or adjusting furniture for ergonomic reasons, discuss this with your manager and then make an appointment with an health and safety adviser via arbo.advies@vu.nl.
