Demolition work is scheduled between mid-July and the end of August 2026 to minimize inconvenience to the surrounding area. Despite this planning, some nuisance is unfortunately unavoidable. Think of noise, vibrations, dust and extra transport movements to and from campus.
Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam is doing everything possible to inform students, employees and visitors in a timely and careful manner about the work and its possible consequences. The planning of the dismantling will explicitly take into account examination periods, resits and other activities on campus.

Demolishing BelleVUe: frequently asked questions
Why does BelleVUe need to be demolished?
BelleVUe was always intended to be a temporary building. The Environment Department (OD) has recently decided that it will no longer allow the presence and use of BelleVUe as of the end of 2027. Therefore, VU Amsterdam must dismantle the building. This also applies to the temporary Filosofenhof building on the VU campus. Both buildings will be demolished in phases: in the summer of 2026 BelleVUe and in the summer of 2027 Filosofenhof. BelleVUe will no longer be in use by staff and students as of June 2026.
What is the schedule for demolition?
Removal of furniture will begin in mid-June. In late June, we will begin clearing out furnishings and harvesting materials. In early July we will start dismantling parts, which may involve some more transportation movements and noise. The structural demolition with the most inconvenience will start from July 20 during the summer vacation. We expect to complete the demolition by mid-August.
What will happen to the departments and people now housed in BelleVUe?
There are two users moving out of BelleVUe. The Administrative Affairs workstations in BelleVUe will be eliminated. Administrative Affairs will remain in its current spots in the Main Building. Ad Valvas is moving to the 5th floor of the OZW Building.
Will a new building replace BelleVUe?
No new building will replace the Bellevue site. The site will be landscaped as part of the outdoor space after demolition.
What nuisance is to be expected from demolition work?
Demolition work may cause vibrations and noise. Because demolition will take place during the summer months, inconvenience to employees, students, tenants of surrounding buildings and visitors will be minimal. The supply and removal of demolition materials and machinery across campus is also limited to the summer months.
What route will construction traffic travel across campus?
There is a logistics plan whereby heavy traffic will be routed via the main roads (Van der Boechorststraat) of the Zuidas and drive as short as possible across campus. The construction route can be seen on this map.
