Guide and connect effectively

Training for Mentors

How do you connect well with your mentor students? How do you react when the student is not doing well? Where are your boundaries and to whom can you refer?

As a mentor of a (group of) student(s), a lot is expected of you. You introduce students to the program, you ensure bonding with fellow students and the program, and you are a first point of contact. Although the form and frequency of contact moments varies by program, the knowledge and skills a mentor needs are largely the same.

To ensure that all VU mentors are well prepared, we offer training courses that provide guidance on the above questions. Among the topics covered are basic conversation techniques, inclusion, guarding your own boundaries and learning about the VU-wide offerings around student welfare.

Result
After the training, participants know better:

  • How you want to conduct your mentoring interviews and how to respond to complex cases;
  • Which role you have as a mentor (and which you don't);
  • And how to best support and refer students when problems arise.

Tailor-made
Are you a coordinator of a mentoring program? Then we can organize a customized training program for your program free of charge. Are you interested? Then feel free to contact Tim Lampe, t.lampe@vu.nl.
