Educational leadership at strategic level

The design of the course is based on the educational vision of VU Amsterdam. This means that leadership and commitment are expected from both programme participants and supervisors, that participants and supervisors learn from and with each other in a group, that there is attention and openness to diversity, and that during the course there is regular 'looking outside', outside one's own framework.

The track includes an intake, two leadership labs of 3 consecutive days, an expedition of 3 consecutive days, a 24-hour session with overnight stay, four regular meetings, three workshops, a harvest day for VU Amsterdam, a final interview and a celebratory certification. Participants work on a joint assignment to strengthen teaching quality at VU Amsterdam and on a faculty project related to that joint assignment. The content of the 24-hour session and three-day sessions will be determined in part by the participants; they will contribute topics and guide programme components. Certain themes that are high on the agenda for VU Amsterdam will be addressed in each case. These include visions of educational quality and assessment, academic citizenship, diversity and talent development.

Learning Objectives
The goal of the ELC programme is to empower participants in carrying out their strategic, leadership and educational roles. At the end of the course, participants are able to:

  • lead educational (innovation) processes from a well-founded and personal vision of their own leadership;
  • lead teams and individual colleagues from a lived professional identity and stimulate colleagues in their professional development;
  • strengthen community building within their own faculty and the VU;
  • view current educational challenges from different perspectives, and creatively transform them into a solution;
  • actively shape the future on the basis of a (long-term) vision of current social and educational themes;
  • promote their own professional development on the basis of personal development questions, by experimenting with new behavior and reflection.
