During the design workshop, you will work together on a course and leave with a blueprint for your new course that you are excited about and confident in. Designing education is a profession in its own! The design workshop does justice to the structure of education at VU Amsterdam and consists of phases that are completed in chronological order.
The education specialists pay explicit attention to two phases of educational design: analysis and design.
General course of the design workshop
- analysis of context
- the student's learning path
- educational design per session
Preperation
Prior to the design workshop, you collect all evaluation data from students and colleagues. You also collect the preconditions that the course must meet within the faculty and programme. This gives you sufficient input for the design workshop.
Design workshop – phase 1: Analysis
During the design workshop, you will actively start analysing the context, formulate design criteria that the future course must meet, and work together to develop the optimal learning pathway for students. This will give you sufficient guidance to then design a blueprint for the course.
Design workshop – phase 2: Educational design
Once a clear picture of the design criteria and the student's learning pathway has been formulated jointly, you will start working on the educational design under supervision. You will create a visualisation of all the activities that take place in the course by means of a storyboard. The storyboard shows a link between the learning objectives and the student activities, learning materials, teacher activities, feedback and assessment for each week.
Continuing after the design workshop
After the design workshop, you will develop the communication and evaluation plan and further elaborate the learning activities on Canvas, in slides and assessment material. During the design workshop, you will be given tools to do this effectively.
