3-Day Training for Ambitious Professionals

In this training, you will gain insights into principles of effective leadership, understand how to co-create solutions into diversity & inclusion, and find out how to navigate organizational power dynamics.

The training is taught as three full day workshops, delivered by academic experts at the VU Amsterdam.

Workshops

Workshop 1: Adaptive leadership
Prof. Dr. Mark van Vugt

This workshop on adaptive leadership covers a range of topics that aim to help professionals understand leader-follower relations in the workplace from an evolutionary perspective. By incorporating these elements, the workshop helps professionals gain a deeper understanding of the principles of good leadership, enhance their personal leadership skills, and foster productive and supportive work environments based on an appreciation of our evolutionary heritage.

Learning goals:
• Understand what basic needs exist in your team and organization.
• Discover how to adapt your leadership style to the situation.

Workshop 2: Fostering diversity and inclusion

In this workshop on fostering diversity and inclusion, professionals learn to navigate the compexities of today’s workplace environment. Sanne will discuss the latest scientific insights into the main barriers hindering diversity and the significance of inclusion. Participants will reflect on their own experiences with diversity and inclusion and will cocreate ways to create more inclusive leadership.

• Get added value from diversity.
• Deal effectively with Imposter feelings.

Workshop 3: Navigating organizational power dynamics

In this workshop on navigating organizational power dynamics, professionals gain an understanding of the causes and consequences of power in organizations, and of the need and the limitations of engaging in power dynamics. Participants will reflect on their own preferences for dealing with power, start to map power structures in their organization, and discuss strategies to effectively navigate the power dynamics in their own work environment.

Learning goals:
• Learn to recognize power relations in your environment.
• Develop political skills.

Trainer: Prof. Dr. Mark van Vugt

Mark van Vugt is Professor of Evolutionary Psychology, Work and Organizational Psychology at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and Director of the Amsterdam Leadership Lab, He is also affiliated with the University of Oxford. His expertise is in evolutionary perspectives on human social behavior and in applications of evolutionary psychology to fields such as leadership, business and management, economics, sustainability, health, and politics. He is a prolific author of books and scientific articles and regularly appears in the media to talk about leadership. www.professormarkvanvugt.com

Wendy Andrews moved to academia after a career in business. Her research focuses on competition, hierarchy, and leadership. Her teaching includes courses on team dynamics and leadership in organizations. In 2018 she joined the VU Amsterdam, where she works as Assistant Professor in Organizational Psychology. In her role of Business Director of the Amsterdam Leadership Lab she aims to build bridges between the research community and professional in practice.

Trainer: Dr. Sanne Feenstra

Sanne Feenstra is an Assistant Professor in Organizational Psychology at VU Amsterdam. She completed her PhD in 2020 at the University of Groningen. Her research focuses on leadership, power, and the impostor phenomenon. Sanne has published her research in journals such as Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes and Applied Psychology: An International Review and her research is regularly quoted in the press and various media outlets.
