GSSS – Presenting in Academic English

GSSS – Presenting in Academic English

This is a practice course for PhD students to work presenting academic English in a spoken context. Students will learn and practice techniques in order to improve their clarity, comprehensibility and confidence while speaking Academic English.

Course Description

The course focuses on linguistic (vocabulary, articulation, pronunciation) and paralinguistic (pace, inflection, pausing) elements in spoken English. Students will practice using their own topics and materials to improve their abilities to communicate effectively in international academic English.

  • Max. number of students: 6
  • Admission criteria: No prerequisites for VU-GSSS students. For non-VU-GSSS PhDs, there will be an individual assessment regarding eligibility by the lecturer based on your registration form.
  • Concluding assessment: Yes.
  • Assessment type: Students will conclude the course with a short presentation on a topic from their field.
  • With certificate: Yes, upon request
  • Registration deadline: 4 weeks before the start of the course
  • Available to: All PhDs. Free of charge for VU-GSSS, AISSR, and ZU PhD candidates. A fee of €250 applies for other PhD candidates.
