Course Description
Students will learn what the contribution of epidemiological research has been to our knowledge about etiology, diagnostics, prognosis, prevention, and treatment of mental disorders in children, adolescents and adults. The students will learn the most basic skills in conducting epidemiological research and to judge the quality of epidemiological research from other researchers. We will also focus on the principles and criteria for causality, internal and external validity, different types of errors, confounding, and effect modification. Furthermore, we will teach students basic statistical methods needed for conducting research in developmental and clinical psychopathology. Finally, students will develop a clear understanding of how a research question can be studied within an appropriate design, using relevant statistical methods, which will be reported in a method section of a paper.
