Examples of Community Service Learning

Be inspired by stories of VU lecturers who work with Community Service Learning (CSL), and examples of CSL courses in a wide variety of disciplines. These diverse perspectives illustrate the many possibilities to tailor and implement CSL.

In the videos below, VU lecturers from different faculties and disciplines share their experiences with Community Service Learning. Every education-society collaboration is different, as it depends on the course objective, nature of the societal problem that is addressed, and the type of societal actors involved.

The lecturers explain how the collaboration between their course and partnering societal organisation was established, how the course took shape and the beneficial outcomes for themselves as a lecturer, their students and society.

Lecturers' experiences

“Usually, your course is already set in stone before it starts. But with CSL, you will learn along the way. Just like your students.”

- Laura Schaap, lecturer at the Faculty of Science, Nutrition and Health

The city as a rich learning environment

Within the CSL programme, VU Amsterdam and the municipality of Amsterdam strengthen their cooperation in the City Deal Kennis Maken. This collaboration aims to develop a sustainable knowledge infrastructure, together with other leading research and education innovators in Amsterdam. The many projects, derived from practice, demonstrate the power of the city as learning environment.
