Welcome to VU-UT

Information for starting VU-UT students

Welcome to Creative Technology (CreaTe) or Mechanical Engineering (ME) at the University of Twente (UT) and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU Amsterdam)!

We can’t wait to welcome you in person this September. Until then, we will make sure you receive all the information you might need. Here, we already answer some of the most frequently asked questions. If you have any questions you can’t find the answer to, feel free to contact us.

Education in Amsterdam and Enschede

  • Is the programme the same at both universities?
Yes! You can follow the VU-UT programmes in ME and CreaTe at both UT and VU, and the content is exactly the same.
  • Why do we sometimes travel to Twente for classes?
You will spend about 80% of your classes and study time in Amsterdam. A few times a month, you will travel to Twente to use UT’s specific facilities, such as labs and materials. On those days, you will also collaborate with UT students. The activities in Twente are mandatory; remote participation is not possible.
  • How often do we go to Twente?
A few times per month. We will share the schedule as soon as it is available.
  • Where do I stay in Twente?
Classes take place on campus. Sometimes, we schedule multiple consecutive days of lessons. In that case, you can stay overnight in the cabins on the UT campus. For many students, this feels like a fun trip where you can enjoy time with your classmates. However, some students prefer to travel back and forth or arrange other accommodations – that’s entirely up to you. Keep in mind that travel and accommodation costs are your own responsibility (for reference, the cabin beds cost €22.50 per night in February 2025). These costs are not included in your tuition fees.
  • What happens between now and the start of the programme in September?
Between your enrolment and the start of the academic year, we will work together to complete your registration. This means you will receive emails from both UT and VU regarding your full enrolment, tuition payment, and introduction days. We are working on making these emails as clear and concise as possible, but expect to receive quite a few messages between now and September.

You can find much more practical information on our website: vu-ut.nl.
