Science Communication & Dialogue with Society
View methodologies
In an increasingly polarised world, building bridges between science and society is more important than ever. Therefore, the Athena Institute is committed to transforming traditional science communication into two-way, engaging dialogue that values citizens' perspectives. Through creative and interactive methods, such as Dialogue Model, Science in Dialogue, Frame Reflection Lab, Theatre Dialogues, Citizen Science Initiatives, Public and Patient Engagement, Community Service Learning (CSL) and Community Engagement, we foster a deeper connection between scientists and publics, building trust, mutual understanding and new knowledge.
Inclusive Knowledge Production & Technology Development
View methodologies
Inclusive Knowledge Production and Technology Development recognizes that innovation is not a linear path from lab to world, but a dynamic, iterative process shaped by diverse actors and contexts. At the Athena Institute, we develop methodologies that actively support this flow — connecting scientific research, design practices, and lived experiences. These methods foster mutual learning and co-creation across disciplines and life worlds, ensuring that knowledge and technologies are more responsive, inclusive, and socially robust. In this section we outline several of the approaches we’ve created to facilitate such inclusive development processes, including STS Making & Doing, Transdisciplinary History, Interactive Learning & Action (ILA), Digital Patient Knowledge (DiPaK), Situated Intervention, Constructive Technology Assessment, Patent Landscaping, Participatory Action Research, Memory Studies, Source Criticism and Historicizing Knowledge(s).
Reflexive Monitoring and Transformative (Policy) Learning
View methodologies
At the Athena Institute, we develop methodologies that aim to strengthen societal transformations towards a more inclusive and just future. These methodologies, that build on rich traditions in policy studies and organizational learning as well as in public engagement and transdisciplinary work, encourage critical reflection on plans and actions and their (potential) outcomes. They enable participants to navigate uncertainty, revise strategies, and co-create long term solutions that are socially robust, and responsive to real-world dynamics. These approaches include; Reflexive Evaluation (RE), Reflexive Monitoring in Action (RMA), Transformative Capacity Flywheel, Dynamic Learning Agenda (DLA), Transformative Learning in Action (TLA) and Living Labs or Social Labs.
