Your looks are important in the Connected World podcast

How important is your appearance to you? Do you think a lot about your looks, or do you actively try to improve them? Aesthetics play an increasingly important role in our society. Even more so: the way we look largely determines our opportunities, the choices we make and how we treat people. Doortje Smithuijsen explores and discusses the phenomenon of 'aesthetic capital' in the new podcast of profile theme Connected World.

We dress according to TikTok trends such as Old money, Barbiecore or Coastal grandma. We apply filters on social media, carefully select our dates via dating apps based on looks and take botox at a young age to avoid looking old. At the same time, on platform BeReal, we must show the "most real" version of ourselves.

With the rise of social media and the increased visibility of our physical appearance, aesthetic capital is becoming increasingly important. It captures the way we look and how this appearance determines our class and opportunities in society.

In Connected World's new podcast, philosopher and podcast creator Doortje Smithuijsen interviews scientists at VU and beyond about the issues that concern her - and many of us - around aesthetic capital. From the wonderful world of dating apps to the evolution of beauty over the years and the influence of appearance on social inequality and mental health. Smithuijsen, along with VU experts, highlights social developments and issues related to beauty.
