World Philosophies book talks

The World Philosophies book talks return this fall after a successful first season! Join these thought-provoking, interactive discussions about thinkers, texts and themes emanating from different world philosophies.

Each book talk, (PhD) students from VU and Amsterdam University College and the rest of the audience engage in a lively discussion with an author from the Bloomsbury Introductions to World Philosophies about their book. In preparation for the discussion, (PhD) students dive into the VU Library’s book collection or Special Collections in search of books or objects that illustrate, contrast, or bring different perspectives to that day’s topic. For example, during Pascah Mungwini’s book talk, Imani Heijmans and Wanjiku van den Akker used colonial maps of Africa from the VU’s maps collection to reflect on the history of African philosophy. Below, you can find more information about the previous book talks.

These book talks are organized in collaboration with Prof. dr. Monika Kirloskar-Steinbach (VU), editor of the series. Are you a (PhD) student and would you like to be involved in a book talk? Don’t hesitate to reach out to Monika via monika.kirloskar@vu.nl. Please note which book from the series you would like to discuss.

The Philosophy of the Yogasutra

The Philosophy of the Yogasutra

Join us for an enlightening talk by Karen O’Brien-Kop at 3D@VU about the profound philosophical depth of the Yogasutra and why this collection of Sanskrit sutras on the theory and practice of yoga deserves to be read alongside Parmenides’ On Nature and Plato’s Phaedo as a classic of world philosophy.

Project Re:Book

These Book Talks are hosted by the VU Library’s Project Omboeken (or Re:book). The University Library houses 30 kilometers of books, many of which are rarely used and are simply gathering dust in the stack rooms. The library started an innovative project to find new ways to present these books to the public. For example, we created a multidisciplinary collection on sustainability for the Green Office and created an art installation with books, called Pantheon. New forms of presentation also means that we are experimenting with new ways of working, for example by offering more people a role in selecting books to be placed prominently on display, such as during these book talks. The (PhD) students curate a collection of books related to the topic, breathing new life into them.
