Working and studying securely

VU Amsterdam provides a range of useful tools to help you work and study securely. Make sure you take advantage of them!

SURFfilesender
You can use SURFfilesender to send and receive files up to 500 GB quickly, easily and securely. Developed and made available by SURFnet, SURFfilesender enables staff and students to share research data and other privacy-sensitive files securely and quickly using a web browser.

Zivver
As a member of the university’s staff, you exchange all kinds of information by email. VU Amsterdam offers Zivver, an encryption tool that allows you to send messages and files safely and securely. Zivver not only encrypts messages, but also provides additional guarantees that an email will reach the right recipient.

Multi-Factor Authentication
You can obtain secure access to Microsoft365 using Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA). Completing a number of steps enables you to access certain apps and websites. MFA is one of the most effective security measures you can take to protect data and prevent misuse of accounts.

Data carriers
Data carriers provide temporary storage for files, data or programs. They are not suitable for saving personal data. If you have no choice but to do so, you must make sure that these data are encrypted. You can apply for this via the IT Service Portal.

Secure USB sticks, also known as secure keys, are USB sticks on which the files are secured with a pin code. This type of USB stick is suitable for temporary storage of confidential files, personal data, patient data, research data or programs. You can order secure USB sticks.
