A PhD journey is a remarkable experience filled with discoveries and intellectual growth. Next to that, PhD candidates face a unique set of challenges—pressures to publish, coping with uncertainties, and balancing work and personal life. It is an intensive process where resilience and self-care are essential. At Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, we believe in the power of positive support, and we are proud to introduce the PhD Bench – an inspiring initiative designed to help PhD candidates flourish both academically and personally.
This initiative, spearheaded by Joshua Nooij (PhD at the Institute for Environmental Studies and Chair of the VU PhD Council) and Leonore de Wit (Associate Professor of Clinical Psychology at the Faculty of Behavioural and Movement Sciences), aims to create a space where PhD candidates can talk openly about both success and challenges in academia. In this pilot project, candidates sign up for one-on-one sessions with retired academics, who, with their wealth of experience and insight, offer a compassionate ear to the PhD’s facing the whirlwind of work that a PhD can be.
What is the PhD Bench?
The PhD Bench is inspired by the globally successful "Friendship Bench" concept and provides an accessible, low-threshold opportunity for PhD candidates to engage in conversations with experienced mentors. Retired professors, who have themselves navigated the complexities of an academic career, offer a listening ear, understanding, and valuable insights. Whether it is about finding balance, building confidence, or strengthening mental resilience – the PhD Bench offers a safe and supportive space.
Why this initiative?
Research has shown that PhD candidates worldwide increasingly experience stress and performance pressure. Next to that there is a need to gain insight in the future in academia: What opportunities are there and what challenges lie ahead and how do I prepare myself? The PhD Bench was established to help candidates enhance their mental well-being and strengthen their coping strategies. This initiative is not only about overcoming obstacles but also about personal growth, self-reflection, and discovering new perspectives on challenges.
The Power of a Meaningful Conversation
Discussions with mentors at the PhD Bench go beyond academic guidance. They are enriching, open, and respectful dialogues that contribute to a positive mindset. “Knowing that someone understands you and has been through what you are experiencing can make all the difference.”, explains Joshua Nooij.
What to Expect?
- An open and welcoming atmosphere – conversations feel like a relaxed moment with someone you appreciate and respect.
- Experienced mentors – retired professors share their knowledge and experience, without judgment and with empathy.
- A focus on resilience and growth – together, we explore how challenges can be transformed into learning opportunities.
- Accessible support – not a long-term program, but a valuable session that can have an immediate impact.
A Positive Reception
Since sign-ups for the PhD Bench initiative began in early March, the response from participants has been overwhelmingly positive. Many candidates have expressed how much they appreciated the opportunity to sit down with someone who not only understood the academic pressures they were facing but who also provided genuine emotional support. As one participant noted, “This conversation helped me navigate what I truly like about my career, and how I can approach that in the future.”
Feedback has shown that the PhD Bench is fulfilling a crucial gap in the support system for PhD candidates. It’s not just about academic mentorship; it’s about emotional well-being, and that holistic approach has struck a chord with many.
