The JSMC community

One of the distinguishing features of the John Stuart Mill College is our vibrant community, with PPE students, PhD students and lecturers coming together on the fourth floor.

During each academic year, we host a range of extracurricular activities besides regular classes, aimed at broadening students’ experiences as well as creating a sense of community on the fourth floor. Each Wednesday afternoon, we invite a guest speaker in a collaboration between PPE faculty and the student-led “PPE Encounters”. Moreover, KallioPPE, PPE’s study association, organises several social events each month, ranging from get-togethers to debate events to election nights. The JSMC also holds a yearly Barbecue in June to invite students and teachers to celebrate the end of classes together.

The JSMC encourages and appreciates students’ engagement in extracurricular activities and gives students the possibility to launch their own projects.

Our student-led initiatives

  • KallioPPE

KallioPPE is the Study Association for PPE students. Founded in 2017, KallioPPE plans events that contribute to students’ academic and social life and bring them closer together. Moreover, KallioPPE regularly cooperates with the John Stuart Mill College to organize joint events. The organisation is currently composed of the board and seven committees, each tasked with a specific aspect of the student life (Academic, Social, Publication, Sustainability, Sports, Fresher’s, Second Years, Encounters). You can find the board members in the board room at the end of the member area on the 4th floor, or reach out to them via info@kallioppe.com.

  • PPE Encounters

PPE Encounters was initially founded in 2018 as an independent, student-led body with the aim to invite guest speakers for interviews at the John Stuart Mill College. In 2023, it was made a committee of KallioPPE. The aim of PPE Encounters is to give motivated students the opportunity to speak directly to professionals from the world of philosophy, politics and economics, with an emphasis on broadening the guest profiles to include policymakers, activists and publicists next to academics. Moreover, PPE Encounters are the journalists of PPE: besides inviting guest speakers, they publish a bi-monthly newspaper, the Paper Mill, and host a podcast. These outlets give PPE students a platform and contribute to democratizing societal debates. Moreover, they encourage PPE students to engage in PPE related discussions beyond their regular classes.
