Stand up for academic freedom

Around the world, scientists are currently being censored, threatened or even forced to flee. The VU Academic Freedom Program offers them the opportunity to continue their research in safety at VU University Amsterdam.

VUfonds promotes meaningful scholarship, talent development and the connection of science with society. It acts as a catalyst for social change. We want to support and protect scientists, so that their talent is preserved and free scientific practice can continue. Will you help make this possible?

Academic freedom is at risk
The pressure on academic freedom is increasing worldwide. In one year alone, 395 attacks on higher education were reported in 49 countries. Ten years ago, this was less than half with 158 attacks. As the safety of scientists is threatened, independent scholarship, critical debate and thus democracy become compromised. Your help is needed to allow more scientists to continue their research in freedom and safety.

"Asking critical questions was enough to get arrested"

~ Prosper Simbarashe Maguchu, assistant professor at the Faculty of Law

What the VU is doing
Already since 2009, the VU has offered scientists in need a safe haven thanks to the VU Academic Freedom Program. This has allowed more than twenty scientists to continue their research in freedom and become part of our academic community.

"This programme was my salvation. VU Amsterdam not only helps with practical matters like housing, a residence permit and insurance, but also provides a great academic network."

~ Prosper Simbarashe Maguchu, assistant professor at the Faculty of Law

Why your financial support is needed
At a time when more scientists than ever need a safe haven for independent research, national budget cuts are reducing the funds available to support scientists.

VUfonds wants to contribute to independent and free science for talented researchers who are restricted in other places around the world. With your financial support, even more scientists and their families can be accommodated. This covers the costs of their research, publications and conferences. It also provides for living expenses and practical matters such as visas, insurance and housing.

What your contribution makes possible
You give scientists who had to flee their countries a new chance. They can resume their research, share their expertise with students and enrich education with their knowledge and experience.

Contribute to academic freedom so that:

  • Knowledge and innovation are preserved
  • Students are exposed to new perspectives
  • Independent research is protected and critical debate and democracy persist

Frequently asked questions

  • How does the programme select scientists?

In cooperation with the international network Scholars at Risk, the programme's committee assesses which scientist most urgently needs support. This involves looking at whether VU University Amsterdam best suits the scientist's needs when it comes to network and research facilities, for example.

  • What does the programme entail?

The programme allows scientists to continue their research at VU University Amsterdam. To this end, they get access to research facilities and supervision. While they are not employed by the university, they do receive a 'hospitality grant', which acts as a living allowance.

  • What happens after the programme ends?

Scientists often stay at VU Amsterdam for two to three years. After that, they try to continue their careers. In the Netherlands, another country, or back in their home country if the situation is safe there.

  • How is the support used?

The support covers the cost of a visa for the scientist and pays for research expenses. In addition, scientists receive a 'hospitality grant': a living allowance. This is also necessary for visa applications, as it proves that they can support themselves.
