Quality of Analysis

The quality of the data produced by chemical analyses is of utmost importance. Different results by different laboratories for an analysis of the same sample can lead to serious damage; financially because wrong decisions with large implications for e.g. the environment could be taken but erratic results can obviously also damage human health.

E&H is therefore focused on continuously improving the quality of analysis. This is done by organizing international interlaboratory studies, e.g. within the framework of the proficiency testing program QUASIMEME and within the NORMAN project.

E&H is also a reference laboratory for the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP).  In that program, large international interlaboratory studies on persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are being organized. E&H has equipment to produce reference materials for biota (e.g. canned fish), and contributes on a regular basis to the certification of reference materials for the Institute for Reference Materials and Measurements (IRMM), Joint Research Centre, Geel, Belgium. E&H also provides training for laboratories in e.g. developing countries.
