Metabolomics

Metabolomics studies the small molecules, also known as metabolites, that occur in organisms. The collection of these metabolites is called the metabolome. The Department of Environment and Health used state-of-the-art platforms (LC-QToF, LC-MS/MS, GC-ToFMS) to study environmental and human metabolomics in relationship to chemical exposure.

Cell models and organisms (e.g. snail, zebrafish) are used to study specific molecular pathways (e.g. neurotoxicity, endocrine disruption), or so called untargeted metabolomics is carried to perform discovery analysis. Hundreds or even thousands of metabolites simultaneously, and the potential to rapidly assess many aspects of an organism’s current energetic, oxidative, endocrine, and reproductive status.

One of the main drives is to anchor the metabolite profiles to organism’s functioning, phenotypical changes, health effects, and chemical exposure. We try to relate chemical exposure to molecular mechanisms and adverse health effects.
