Workshops Parallel session 3

First steps in grant writing: Real experiences with Veni & ERC

Session leads:

Dr. Lianne Bakkum, Assistant Professor in Clinical and Family Studies, VU
Dr. Sven Askes, Assistant Professor in the PhotoConversion Materials (PCM) section

What does it actually take to secure early-career funding? In this session, Sven Askes and Lianne Bakkum share their personal journeys and honest experiences from applying for the ERC Starting Grant (Sven) and Veni (Lianne). Moving beyond writing guidelines, we focus on the realities behind the scenes: developing research ideas, handling broad review panels, preparing for interviews, and navigating time constraints, setbacks, and expectations. We will discuss insights on taking risks, dealing with rejection, and staying grounded throughout the process. Join us for an open exchange of experiences and practical insights for early-career researchers.

Ins & Outs about Academic Collaborative Center Viveon

Session Lead:

Simone van der Plas, Knowledge Development Advisor at Viveon

Academic Collaborative Centre Viveon is a partnership between Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU) and 's Heeren Loo, a large care organization for people with intellectual disabilities. Since 2011, we have been working together on knowledge development and knowledge implementation.

During our workshop, you will gain insight into the way we collaborate, how projects are initiated and developed, the outcomes they generate, how research findings are translated into practice, and the implications of this collaboration for fundraising and securing external funding.

Using a case study and interactive working methods, you will explore the dynamics of an academic collaborative centre and its relationship with funding and resource acquisition.

Funding Innovation under the National Technology Strategy: Opportunities and Developments

Session leads:

Koen Vermeer, Programma Manager Holland High Tech

Public-private collaboration is a cornerstone of Dutch innovation policy, and the PPS-I scheme one of its key financing instruments, both now and in redesigned form from 2028. This session outlines the resulting funding opportunities for innovation in key enabling technologies (KET), including those relevant to health. It reflects the efforts of the KIA KET and Holland High Tech (TKI HTSM), guided by the National Technology Strategy (NTS), and spans the current funding period (through 2027) as well as the next. It also discusses the developments in the new PPS-I scheme, against the backdrop of the government's industrial policy on strategic markets.
