Finding hope in times of climate change

Responses to climate change are often pessimistic or optimistic in nature, but there appears to be a third way: that of hope.

Conversations and debates on climate change are typically rooted in either an optimistic or a pessimistic vision. In this podcast, Dr Jan Jorrit Hasselaar explains that a third scenario is possible: that of hope. In the wisdom traditions, hope is viewed as a journey in which parties learn to bear responsibility for a shared future. Together with stakeholders, including government and market parties, it is essential to establish ‘workshops of hope’ in the public domain in which parties can build trust. Participants listen rather than debate, walk a mile in each other’s shoes and take concrete steps together. In South Africa, these workshops are called ‘courageous conversations’.

This project is linked to the following SDG's:

  • SDG3: Good health and well-being
  • SDG 13: Climate action
  • SDG 17: Partnerships for the goals
