Environmental and indoor Exposure Assessment (in- and outdoors)

To assess the risk of chemicals for humans and the environment, it is necessary to obtain a clear picture of the levels of the contaminants, first in the environment, including water, sediment, organisms, etc. In addition, levels of the same compounds can also be analyzed in human matrices such as mother’s milk, blood and urine.

E&H has state-of-the art instrumentation to analyse samples with a very high sensitivity and selectivity. Modern mass spectrometers such as Time-of-Flight coupled to gas or liquid chromatographic systems provide a wealth of information on levels and identity of the target contaminants.

Due to the high volumes of chemicals in consumer products in combination with the high proportion of time spent indoors, humans are exposed to higher levels than before. Exceptionally high levels of specific compounds (e.g. flame retardants, phthalates) have been found indoors, and recent studies show that the intake of these chemicals by dust can contribute substantially to the total daily intake. E&H performs target analyses of products, indoor dust, and air but also non-target and suspect screenings as a horizon-scanning of chemical exposure.
