Entrepreneurial Self-Efficacy of Scientists: A qualitative study on ATTRACT Phase 2 R&D&I Ventures

This study provides practical relevance to educators and science entrepreneurs, identifying a need for tailored education for science and technology-based entrepreneurship to foster the development of a dual self-efficacy that reflects scientific norms and commercialisation needs.

To boost the transformation of scientific discoveries into successful businesses, it's crucial to understand what makes scientists confident in their ability to become entrepreneurs. While there's plenty of research on entrepreneurial self-efficacy, not much focuses specifically on scientists. We think this is important because scientists have a unique way of thinking shaped by their scientific training. So, we looked into what factors make scientists feel confident about starting businesses, like cultural and institutional support, education, experience, and personal traits. Our study suggests that to help scientists become successful entrepreneurs, we need tailored education programs that blend scientific principles with business skills. This can help them build the confidence they need to thrive in both worlds.
