Election Time: Migration

How do we deal with asylum seekers and migrants? How can shelter, asylum procedures and return policy be shaped in a humane and just manner? How do we reach agreement on migration policy in the Netherlands and Europe? How do we prevent human rights violations within or at Europe's borders? How do we ensure a safe haven for refugees?

We see many reports about the full shelters in the Netherlands, questions about where refugees can be placed and polarizing discussions about how to deal with these issues. In short, there is much disagreement within our society about how to shape our migration policy. Based on sound research, how can we look at what the effects are from certain policy choices?

The time that refugees have to wait for a residence permit in the Netherlands can range from days to even years. Applying for family reunification can also involve major obstacles, resulting in even more waiting. Legal philosopher Martijn Stronks researches the rights of migrants and sees that governments often make people wait for long periods of time, leading to distressing situations.
