Diversity at Computer Science VU

This page lists some of the people working on diversity in the department in various directions. If you would like to ask a question, raise an issue, or promote an initiative, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Initiatives

Monthly student and teaching diversity meeting.

On the second Monday of each month, the department hosts a lunch meeting for students and teaching staff to discuss issues and (potential) initiatives around diversity and safety. The aim is to flag problems early on, and then come up with ways in which the department can improve diversity and inclusion in the student population. The meeting is always from 12:45-13:30, and the room details are sent around on the Canvas communities of the study programs in the department.

This meeting has been used to identify and solve problems that students encounter, but also to set up various initiatives.

Hack4Her

For three years running, the department has supported the organisation of the Hack4Her hackathon:https://hack4her.github.io/. This is a female-focused event, which serves as a complement to the more general programming competitions organised for the local students. The initiative has received the AYA award for societal impact in 2023 and is now being broadened nationally.

Other resources and initiatives

For an overview of other resources and initiatives that may be relevant to diversity, see this slidedeck. These slides are presented to the students in the first course of the first year.

People

We have three diversity officers. They are working researchers, who use part of their time to answer questions, spot issues, and spearhead initiatives on diversity.

Katja Tuma, k.tuma@vu.nl, Students and science, scientific lead of Hack4Her

Kousar Aslam, k.aslam@vu.nl, PhD students

Peter Bloem, p.bloem@vu.nl, Students and teaching

While each officer has their own focus, this division is not strict, and you can approach any diversity officer with any problem.

In addition to the three diversity officers, the following people are involved with diversity in various ways.

Marlies van Daalen, m.l.van.daalen@vu.nl, programme coordinator

Selma Zaghow, s.m.a.zaghow@vu.nl, programme coordinator

Patricia Lago, p.lago@vu.nl, professor, member of the department management team
