Philanthropy refers to contributions in the form of money, goods, and/or time (expertise) that are voluntarily provided by individuals and organizations (foundations, businesses, lotteries) to primarily support non-profit organizations and initiatives. ‘Giving in the Netherlands’ (Geven in Nederland) is one of the most important research projects conducted by the Center for Philanthropic Studies. Since 1995, the giving behavior of households, individuals, foundations, businesses, and lotteries has been mapped every two years and compiled into a macroeconomic overview. This encompasses not only contributions in the form of money and goods but also time and effort, as many Dutch citizens engage in volunteering across various societal domains.
In addition to ‘Giving in the Netherlands’, the DONORS group within the Center for Philanthropic Studies focuses on research into blood, tissue, and organ donation. The Center for Grantmaking Research fosters the co-creation of knowledge relating to philanthropic funding and its implications for foundations and nonprofit organizations. The Social Productivity group aims to explore the value of unpaid work.
