Career Services - Faculty of Religion and Theology

Studying is so much more than studying for your vocation, your passion or preparing for a specific job or sector. It's about getting to know yourself and discovering what you want and what you're good at.

Career Services of the Faculty of Religion and Theology provides and guides students and recent alumni in their career path by helping students identify their strengths and interests, explore potential career options, and develop a personal plan for their future careers and goals. In this way, the Faculty of Religion and Theology would like to adequately prepare you for the future labour market. Of course, we do this first by offering quality education. But we would also like to prepare you for the unique and diverse job market where you can work as a theologian and religious studies scholar.

Therefore, we provide guidance, job and internship search assistance, network opportunities, and

offer workshops and career-related events talored to the religious workfield. The workshops are given by various alumni of the Faculty of Religion and Theology. Examples of workshops are:

  • Job application training
  • Reflection on personal talents and motives
  • PhD: How do you do that?
  • Reli- entrepeneurship bootcamp
  • Networking and learning to pitch yourself

In these ways, we try to ensure that you, as a recently graduated professional, can make a conscious, appropriate, and fulfilling career choice.

Would you like to work independently? This can be done, for example, by doing career tests. These can be found via the following link: https://vu.nl/nl/student/career-services/loopbaantesten

Would you like to discuss the results of the tests? Please contact FRT (Faculty of Religion and Theology) Career Services.

You can also contact FRT Career Services if you would like assistance in writing your resume and cover letter. Career Services can provide you with feedback and help you present yourself effectively to potential employers. As well as job interview preparations with tips and practice sessions to help you feel confident and prepared.

For questions or to make an appointment with Career Services, you can email careerservice.frt@vu.nl  We will help you.

Spiritual Care students

After completing a Master's degree in Spiritual Care, you can start working in the professional field as a starter. You have gained theoretical knowledge in the lecture halls and during your internship you learned to put the profession into practice.

If you have graduated, it is recommended to register with the Association of Spiritual Caretakers (VGVZ). More information about this can be requested from Hans Alma h.a.alma@vu.nl or via the website of VGVZ https://vgvz.nl/

If you are feeling unsure about your next steps or need guidance in your career journey, we encourage you to schedule a one-on-one meeting with Mikkie van der Mik, Career Officer of the Faculty of Religion and Theology. They are eager to assist you with any questions or concerns you may have, not matter how big or small.

During these appointments, you will receive personalized attention and guidance on application skills such as CV writing, LinkedIn profile optimization, and crafting an effective cover letter. You may schedule a single check-in or multiple appointments according to your needs and preferences.

We believe in supporting your alumni throughout their career journey and helping them achieve their professional goals. Do not hesitate to reach out to us by emailing careerservice.frt@vu.nl and together we will find an appropriate moment to meet each other (digitally).

  • Contributing to Career Services as an alumni

Already graduated and working? And do you want to share your knowledge and experience with current students in the form of a workshop or guest lecture? That is very much appreciated! Your insights and expertise can inspire the next generation of students to get a better understanding of the work field, learn practical skills, and to get ready for the next phase of their lives.

If you are interested in contributing to your faculty, please contact us to discuss potential topics and scheduling. Your time and expertise will make a real difference to our students' lives. It can be an awesome (networking) opportunity for both you and the students.

  • For organizations

Career Services also helps students throughout their internship experience, where they can conduct meaningful research on religion and its impact on various organizations and societal aspects. As the significance of meaning making and religion in the workplace continues to grow, young employees are increasingly interested in the ethical practices of organizations and how they address matter related to religion, society, and spirituality. Is your organization grappling with questions related to religion and meaning making, such as managing religious diversity within the workplace? If so, we are here to help!

Complete the form below and send it to careerservice.frt@vu.nl. We will review your submission and reach out to you to discuss how we can be of assistance.
