Amsterdam AI @VU Amsterdam

Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam participates in the Amsterdam AI coalition: the city of Amsterdam, industry and various knowledge institutes join forces in groundbreaking research and a societal approach to AI.

Amsterdam AI is a collaboration between government, academic, medical and other organisations in Amsterdam to help the city develop and deploy responsible technology in AI. Projects focus on strengthening the AI ecosystem and work on AI solutions in three domains: business innovation, citizen support and health. Artificial Intelligence at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam has always originally been interdisciplinary, human- and society-oriented, resulting in a leading position in this field.

The human-centred AI bachelor's programme of has been in the top 10 ICT programmes with the highest percentage of female students for years. The new VU Campus Center for AI & Health is part of one of the leading Human Health and Life Science campuses in the country. Our revolutionary research results, such as robots that produce offspring according to evolutionary principles, is breaking news worldwide, and we are currently leading 2 Gravity Grant research consortia where AI plays a key role: Hybrid Intelligence, on building the next generation of AI; and Stress in Action, exploring new methods for measuring and reducing stress in everyday life.

Amsterdam AI domains and partners
The Amsterdam AI coalition focuses on the practical application of AI technology in three domains: AI for business innovation, AI for citizens and AI for health. The initiative will also encourage companies to conduct research in Amsterdam and locate their headquarters in the city, while helping to improve the quality of life for residents and encourage medical breakthroughs related to AI. The organisations involved are: the Antoni van Leeuwenhoek hospital (working with the Netherlands Cancer Institute), the Amsterdam Economic Board, Amsterdam UMC, Centrum voor Wiskunde & Informatica, the municipality of Amsterdam, Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences, Sanquin, the UvA and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.

Teaching robots to talk

'We see language as a reference system that connects people and systems to their perceptions of the world. In our research projects on communicative robots, we try to build robots that communicate with people in real-life situations.'

How does language refer to reality? How do we use language and context to understand each other? What can we learn about this by teaching AI to talk?

Piek Vossen and his team are looking for the answers.
