Philanthropy stands for contributions in the form of money, goods and or time (expertise), voluntarily made available by individuals and organizations (foundations, companies), which primarily support public benefit purposes. Giving in the Netherlands is one of the main research projects of the Center for Philanthropic Studies. Since 1995, the giving behavior of households, individuals, foundations, companies and lotteries has been researched every two years and compiled into a macro-economic overview. This involves not only contributions in the form of money and goods, but Dutch people also give time and effort in the form of volunteer work in many areas of society.
In addition to Giving in the Netherlands, the DONORS group within the Center for Philanthropic Studies focuses on blood, tissue and organ donation research. The Center for Grantmaking Research encourages the co-creation of knowledge about philanthropic funding and its impact on nonprofit organizations. The Social Productivity group focuses on social productivity and examines the value of unpaid work.
