How to sound like an academic

When writing in a second language such as English, finding the right tone and style is often difficult. In academic writing, a formal and objective writing style immediately makes a good first impression on your readers. Therefore, in this workshop you will learn how to write in an academic style and what choices you can make in it.

During this workshop, we will first discuss some common phenomena to avoid when writing a formal text. Then we will cover strategies to replace informal and subjective expressions with more appropriate language. Finally, we'll look at additional choices to make your text more formal. For example, changing "look at" to "consider" already changes the tone of your text.

Besides explanation of language, tone and style, you will work on a series of assignments. You will also have the opportunity to incorporate feedback on your own text and polish it. Bring a self-written text of about 500 words to the workshop.
