Academic writing [advanced] for academic staff

Building on an analysis of your own texts, this course gives you a clear idea of your strengths and weaknesses concerning your written academic English, set against the background of what is characteristic of the writing in your specific discipline. It shows you what you can do to improve your confidence in the short term, helps you to eradicate those silly mistakes, and gives you a range of options for expressing complex ideas in well-structured English sentences, so that you can add some variation to your writing. There is also an emphasis on improving clarity and compactness of expression. On top of that you will be able to check and revise your own writing in a methodical fashion using a detailed editing checklist.

The course is taught intensively over a 2-week period, with two 3-hour sessions in the first week, and three 3-hour session in the second week. Participants receive detailed feedback on two pieces of their written work via ELS-online, the ALP feedback system.

The course is offered on campus.
