Maps and Atlases

The collection consists of a very wide variety of maps. They vary in age, scale (from world maps to very detailed cadastral maps) and information depicted (topography or specific themes).

The purposes of the maps also differed. There are maps for military use, for shipping, property maps, commercial maps, wall maps to show off, etc. The focal points of the collection are geological and topographical maps, which are ideally suited for landscape research. The collection also contains a large number of (mostly modern) atlases. All loose maps can be found through the library catalog Libsearch and a part of them have been digitized. Are you looking for a specific topographic map from a map series, an atlas map or do you have another question? If so, please contact the curator.

Globes, wall maps and travel guides

Besides maps, the collection also contains other carriers of geographical information. Of all the globes, the Blaeu celestial globe from ca. 1632 is the absolute masterpiece, which has a permanent place at the main entrance of the library. In addition, over three hundred wall maps and school maps are available. The nice collection of travel guides includes numerous copies of the famous Baedeker travel guides. These and other cartographic objects are included in Libsearch. Read more about these resources in the Libguide
