  • 13:30-14:50 Designing education with AI

AI is rapidly changing education, and with it the choices you make as a teacher. In this workshop, you will discover how AI influences your learning outcomes, teaching methods and assessment. Not only what students learn, but also how you design and supervise your lessons. AI thus becomes a design factor that affects all components of constructive alignment: aligning learning objectives, learning activities and assessment into a coherent whole. Together, we will explore how to use AI consciously and thoughtfully, so that it adds value to your teaching rather than competing with it.

After completing this workshop, you will be able to:

    • Explain how AI influences the three components of constructive alignment and what this means for your own educational design.
    • Make informed choices about where and how AI can be used in learning activities and assessment.
    • Take the first steps in redesigning a part of your teaching, giving AI a clear and responsible role.

Programme day 2 – UvA – Wednesday 21 January 2026

  • 09:30-10:50 AI: the perfect lawyer

AI is playing an increasingly important role in law and in educational programmes that include legal issues in their curriculum. During this workshop, you will discover what tools such as GenIA-L, AI Discovery and UvA/HvA AI Chat can mean for your education, research or practice-oriented work. Even if your programme is not primarily legal but does deal with regulations, policy issues or case studies, these tools offer new possibilities for finding and analysing information. We will discuss the opportunities and risks, with a focus on reliability, transparency and the prevention of “hallucinations”.

    After completing this workshop:

    • You will be able to assess how AI-driven legal tech tools can support your education, research or practice-oriented work, even if your programme is not primarily legal.
    • You will be able to search for, explore and analyse legal information, regulations and case studies more effectively. With these legal tools and with the UvA/HvA AI Chat.
    • You will recognise the most important opportunities and risks of AI-driven legal tech, including reliability, transparency and the prevention of 'hallucinations'.

      Workshop leader(s)
Damiaan van Eeten, Martine Veen, Ruben Wiering
  • 11:00-12:20 Critical thinking in the age of AI

AI is changing how we deal with information, responsibility and truth. In this workshop, we explore: What is responsible use of GenAI in education? You will explore ethical dilemmas surrounding autonomy, honesty, transparency and your role as a teacher. From this ethical perspective, we look at the tension between truth and disinformation. AI sounds convincing, but it is not necessarily reliable. You will learn how to critically assess the quality of AI-generated content and how to help your students do the same. Through examples, discussion and practical tools, you will develop a solid and well-founded compass for using GenAI in your teaching.

    After completing this workshop:

    • You will be able to identify the main limitations and risks of AI.
    • You will be able to deal with these risks critically and consciously.
    • You will be able to assess the reliability of AI content using practical criteria.

  • 12:30-13:30 Lunch + Guided tour

Guided tour of the new University Library

  • 13:30-14:50 Discover what data reveals with JASP

Discover the possibilities of the open-source statistics programme JASP! JASP intuitively guides you step by step through advanced analyses, such as Bayesian statistics and predictive models. JASP also offers an accessible introduction to several machine learning techniques, training sets (to build the model) and test sets (to assess performance). This makes JASP particularly suitable for educational contexts. JASP was developed at the University of Amsterdam and is now used worldwide. The programme supports standard analysis methods in both the classical (frequentist) and Bayesian forms (a flexible analysis method that allows you to incorporate previously acquired knowledge into your model). JASP offers several important advantages over SPSS, such as advanced meta-analyses and automatic formatting according to APA guidelines.

    After completing this workshop:

    • You will be familiar with the possibilities of JASP (in education).
    • You will know how to use JASP to analyse data without programming.
    • You will understand how JASP supports classical, Bayesian and simple machine learning models.
    • You will know how to independently load and analyse a dataset and interpret the output.

  • 15:00 - 16:20 Interactive oral assessment as a response to AI (English)

As AI influences traditional assessment practices, interactive oral assessments offer an additional way to observe students thinking and communicating in real time. In this workshop, we explore when and how oral assessments can be useful, and participants will engage with simple design approaches.

    After completing this workshop:

    • You will understand when and how interactive oral assessments can complement traditional assessment in an AI-influenced context.
    • You will be able to design simple interactive oral assessments to observe students' thinking and communication in real time.
    • You will have experimented with practical design approaches for implementing interactive oral tests.

Programme day 3 – VU Amsterdam – Thursday 22 January 2026

  • 09:30-10:50 Open educational resources on a silver platter

Our institutions encourage the use and creation of open educational resources (OER's). But how can you quickly find relevant open alternatives to commercial teaching materials? And how can you use them effectively? In this workshop, we demonstrate how you can use a tool to find suitable open alternatives at chapter level. You will also be introduced to a learning materials generator: a GenAI tool that helps you create assignments, teaching methods and test questions. It automatically searches edusources for relevant open materials, which you can further edit in an edit platform. Finally, we will discuss Open Education: how can you involve students in the development of learning materials?

After completing this workshop, you will be able to:

    • Find, assess and use relevant open learning materials as an alternative to commercial teaching materials.
    • Develop inspiring teaching materials, such as assignments, teaching methods and test questions, using open sources and generative AI.
    • Explain how you can actively involve students in creating and improving open learning materials within education.

  • 13:30-14:50 Explore the Mixed Classroom Model with maps

Differences between students are not an obstacle, but rather an opportunity to enrich the learning experience. In this workshop, you will explore the Mixed Classroom Model of VU Amsterdam and get straight to work with (old) maps from the Special Collections of the VU University Library. We use different perspectives and potential tensions as a starting point to stimulate critical thinking, develop analytical skills and come up with creative solutions. How can maps contribute to a better understanding of the world and make our students better global citizens? No cartographic knowledge or experience is required to participate.

    After completing this workshop:

    • You will know how to create an inclusive learning environment in the lecture hall by applying the Mixed Classroom Model.
    • You will have tools to strengthen the learning process of students by improving your collaboration with them and engaging in dialogue.
    • You will know how our worldview is (partly) determined by maps and which (digital) maps, tools and methods can contribute to a more inclusive worldview.
