Programme day 1 University of Amsterdam - 20 January

  • 9:30-10:50 Getting started with open educational resources: peer-to-peer session

Discover the world of open educational resources (OERs) and how to use them efficiently in your education. In this session, we have invited teachers who have successfully integrated OERs into their course. You will hear about their use case can ask them all your questions regarding OERs. • 11:00-12:20 Disinformation: the student as critical professional

What role does education play in combating disinformation? How can you, as a teacher, help students to be critical global citizens? From a critical examination of the concept of 'truth' we explore themes such as bias and censorship, and how you can have a good conversation about this in your class. We also share valuable tips for recognizing disinformation, also in relation to GenAI.

A preview of the new university library through a video and brief explanation of its significance for education.

  • 13:30-14:50 Diverse & inclusive searches: awareness, sources, strategies

No classification or search system, or bibliographic database is neutral. What search results you or your students get and how they are sorted varies. The most widely used search engines and databases - Google Scholar, Web of Science, etc. - however, have an important commonality: they exhibit a strong bias toward English-language publications from large (read “Western”) publishers and highly regarded journals. This makes relevant but non-mainstream literature less likely to be found, such as non-English publications or work by authors not working in “Western Countries”. In this workshop, these biases will be addressed, as well as ways to perform inclusive searches in search engines and databases.

     After completing this workshop:

    • you will know what is meant by diverse literature
    • you will have an understanding of the biases exhibited by the most used classification and search systems, and databases
    • you will know how to search more inclusively in these search engines and databases
    • you'll know what other ways there are to find non-mainstream literature
