Are you eager to expand your teaching tools and enhance your digital skills? Join the Library Academy organised by the Libraries of Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, University of Amsterdam and Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences, from Monday 29 to Wednesday 31 January, 2024. Registration closed.

Innovate your teaching with workshops on AI, fake news, open education and creative content in education and meet your colleagues in the higher education field of Amsterdam.

Programme day 1 Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam

  • 9:30-10:50 Getting started with podcasts in your education

    Immerse yourself in the exciting world of digital media production during our interactive workshop: "Getting Started with Podcasts"! Discover how to convey your message in a catchy way using podcasts. In this hands-on workshop, you will learn the essential skills and techniques to create catchy content.

    After completing this workshop:

    • You know versatile podcasting options and are able to determine which best suits your educational goals and design
    • You know various platforms and are able to make podcasts accessible and discoverable so they can be seamlessly integrated into teaching
    • you are able to effectively prepare content for podcasts, or work independently to create them
    • You understand the nuances between different podcast formats and know how to use them to achieve both basic and advanced learning objectives

    During this workshop, we'll provide an overview of various podcast formats and give you assignments to tailor them to your specific teaching goals. You will leave the workshop with the skills and confidence to independently create engaging podcasts and use them effectively in your teaching practice.

    Lecturers from the AUAS and UvA who wish to use facilities for recording podcasts after the workshop at the VU can also do so at the UvA and AUAS. Please inquire about this with the workshop instructors.

  • 11:00-12:20 Object Based Teaching and Learning: feel and smell the future of teaching

    How can we create deeper learning experiences, acquire skills and cover complex topics by using objects? In this session, you will experience the power of Object Based Teaching and Learning (OBTL). By trying it yourself, you will learn how to deeply engage students with the information you want to convey through detailed observation of and multi-sensory interaction with objects. We reflect on the many applications of OBTL and cover some concrete tools to get started.

    After completing this workshop:

    • you will have a clear understanding of the concept of "Object Based Teaching and Learning"
    • you will understand the different ways in which Object Based Teaching and Learning can be used to provide students with a richer learning experience
    • you will have an idea of how the library provides support in implementing Object Based Teaching and Learning
    • you will be aware of the heritage objects that the library owns and how you can use them in your education

    This workshop provides valuable insights and practical support to integrate the use of heritage objects into your teaching practice. OBTL is suitable for all disciplines and programs.

  • 13:30-14:50 3D Printing, the basics: experience the power of maker education

    Do you want to enrich your education and are you looking for new opportunities? In this workshop you will be introduced to 3D printing for use in education and how both 3D printed models and the 3D printing process can contribute to learning objectives and learning activities. Based on successful examples of objects integrated into VU educational design, this session provides a solid foundation to get started.

    After completing this workshop:

    • you know the added value of 3D prints for educational purposes
    • you know the added value of maker education and the role that 3D printers can play in this
    • you have discovered how these technologies can contribute to your specific educational practice and you will learn how the university library supports you in this
    • you know what equipment is available and what the technical options are for using 3D prints

    Discover the world of open educational resources and how you can use them efficiently in your educational practice. By reusing open educational resources you can not only save time, but also enrich your education and discover the added value of collaboration between institutions. During this workshop you will be introduced to various databases and search engines in which you can find valuable open educational resources and you will learn how to use them in your education.

    After completing this workshop:

    • you know the most important advantages and disadvantages for sharing and reusing open educational resources
    • you can find open educational resources in various databases and search engines
    • you know how to share your own teaching materials
    • you know under what conditions you can reuse open educational resources
    • you can assess open educational resources for quality

    How do you put together an optimal mix of teaching materials? An optimal mix of learning materials often involves not only closed but also open materials. Both tailored to lower and higher order learning objectives. In this workshop you will learn how to achieve an optimal mix as easily as possible. A useful selection tool is also discussed.

    After completing this workshop:

    • you know which learning materials are related to lower to higher order learning objectives
    • you have access to an online interactive selection tool to integrate learning materials into education, based on scientific publications
    • you know where you can find various forms of (open) content
    • you will receive support in how you can integrate these learning materials into your current education (design)

  • 13:30-14:50 Disinformation: the student as a critical professional

    What role does education play in combating disinformation? How can you, as a teacher, help students to be critical global citizens? From a critical examination of the concept of 'truth' we explore themes such as bias and censorship. And how you can have a good conversation about this in your class. We also share valuable tips for recognizing disinformation.

    After completing this workshop:

    • you have a clear understanding of what constitutes disinformation and the key criteria for assessing it
    • you have gained a better insight into various aspects of disinformation, including the role that your confirmation bias can play
    • you have gained inspiration for possible applications in your education

  • 11:00-12:20 Beyond ChatGPT: AI tools in literature research (waiting list)

    ChatGPT and other AI tools are in the spotlight. Curricula are being adapted to be “ChatGPT-proof,” and we are being flooded with useful AI tools. These are not only useful, but also raise questions about ethics and the consequences for student learning.

    In this workshop you will work with various AI tools that can be used in literature research, such as ChatGPT, Elicit, Perplexity and Semantic Scholar. You will learn how you and your students can use these tools effectively, and there will be room for discussion about the benefits and risks of using them.

    After completing this workshop:

    • You are able to apply various AI tools in searching for literature and research materials
    • You can formulate prompts effectively to obtain the right information
    • You can make a well-considered assessment of the ethical use of AI tools in education

    The workshop consists of a demonstration, a number of practical exercises and a discussion about the possibilities and risks of AI tools.
