Extended Reality as an educational tool

Do you know you can enrich your teaching with Extended Reality (XR) technology? Take your students on a virtual field trip or let students practice their presentation skills in front of a virtual audience. The VU Centre for Teaching and Learning and University Library offer support and hardware for implementation of this technology in education.

At the VU education lab (NU 1A-25), you'll find unique opportunities to enrich your teaching with experiential technologies, including Extended Reality (XR). XR offers several possibilities for education. It provides the possibility to take your students on a virtual field trip to a heritage site. Or to give them extra opportunity to practice difficult situations, like pitches or patient conversations, in a safe environment. To discuss more ideas, you can directly schedule an intake.

Please note: at the lab, we do not create XR environments. Are you interested in having an XR environment developed? Get in touch with Marco Otte from the VR@VU community at the Network Institute by emailing him at m.otte@vu.nl. Read along to see what we do offer.

Use XR equipment
The lab owns various XR headsets, such as the Oculus quest II and HP Reverb G2. These headsets are available for educational purposes. The University Library ensures proper maintenance of the headsets, offers you technical support during educational projects, and provides instructions on how to use the technology. We also have a 360 camera available.

Benefit from organisational support
We also offer organizational support surrounding the use of XR, for example by creating and managing practice spots for students through our own event management system. In addition, you'll receive guidance during the preparation phase and support with practical matters.

Frequently asked questions

  • Can the education lab support in developing a XR environment?

We do not develop our own XR environments. For development of XR environments, for research and education, please contact Marco Otte from the VR@VU Network. The education lab can help you implement an already existing environment in your education and provide hardware and support for and during educational sessions.

  • I already own a XR headset. Can I still use the facilities?

Of course! You can use the physical space in the education lab for lectures with XR. On top, we offer logistical and technical support. We also have an educational advisor on our team who can help you integrate the technology into your teaching.

  • I want to use the XR headsets, but not the physical space. Is that possible?

We can discuss this. The Oculus Quest II operates wirelessly. You can run an existing Oculus app without needing a desktop computer to do so. The other headsets are linked to the computer in the Education Lab and are therefore difficult to move. Please get in touch so we can discuss the possibilities!

  • Can students use XR headsets on their own initiative, outside existing lectures?

Currently, it isn't possible to walk in without an appointment and use the XR headset(s). However, students can use the headsets unaccompanied, when consulted in advance. The Education lab can prepare the appropriate equipment and switch on the XR application. Students can then use the technology during the agreed time slot. Would you like to provide your students with this opportunity? Get in touch to discuss the format.
