Expo: How to… portray a professor?

What is a good professor portrait for VU Amsterdam? This question was the subject of the exhibition and debate 'How to... portray a professor' in the spring of 2020, organised by the WO&MEN@VU network in collaboration with the University Library. Is it a painting, a photograph or a film? Is it abstract or figurative? Do we see an individual or a team; a researcher or a teacher? A selection from the VU's collection of portraits of professors was shown for inspiration.

Most of the portraits of professors that VU Amsterdam has in its possession show white, older men; very formal, often wearing a toga. The portraits were mainly made in the 20th century, from the time (ca. 1920) when the first generation of VU professors was retired. They were made by many different painters (known and less known) in different styles; from very detailed to almost abstract.

The exhibition gave an impression of the various ways of portraying: a traditional painting of the first female VU professor, Gezina van der Molen; male professors painted in various ways, in their work environment or as lecturers; in toga or loosely in suit. But also: modern photo portraits of recent VU professors (male and female).

WO&MEN

WO&MEN is a network of VU employees that aims to improve the equality between men and women within the VU. This is done by organising events, help and consultation, but also coaching and mentoring. For questions and ideas, please contact us via women@vu.nl.
